I'm truly happy for you, Paul. I won't repeat the comments I made on the blog, but I do have a Substack-related question. Will the uni content that you've published here remain available? There have been some real gems that I'd hate to be lost in limbo.

Excellent question! I'm pretty sure that the existing content will remain intact, but I haven't specifically asked the Substack people about that yet. I *want* it to remain intact, so I'll do my best to make sure that happens, even if it requires a workaround or whatever.

This reminds me of a line from the film 'The World of Henry Orient': "I feel awfully happy in a sort of sad way." I am going to miss Paul's writing on uni-related matters but with the state of athletic aesthetics seemingly getting worse with the blight of advertising and endless alternates just for sake of merchandizing, it's becoming a field of diminishing returns for me personally. On the other hand, I've always enjoyed Paul's writing on non-uniform items because, well, I enjoy Paul's writing and felt more times than not that I learned something or was able to see something in a different light. So I'll be looking forward to that. All the best, Paul!

I've always enjoyed seeing you show us the non-uni side of you, even if some of the projects didn't draw my interest (but some definitely did!). I'll definitely be sticking around here to see what you do next!

Paul, I’m so glad for you. I’m genuinely impressed that you’ve done this as you have for as long as you have. I also am excited for what’s next because I read Inconspicuous Consumption when I was in high school and only years after reading Uni Watch did I realize it was the same author. Your interest and curiosity have served so well in uniforms, I’m excited to see what draws you in next.

I will absolutely miss the uni-content. End of an era!

Like most everyone else commenting here, I am very happy for you! I always loved when you went "off-uni" so I feel pretty strongly that I'll like the change. One thing I'd advocate for is keeping your Culinary Corner around. I've learned a lot from that feature and still employ quite a few of those practices! Capers on hot dogs, hamburgers on English muffins, and pea crabs at oyster roasts are some of my favorites!

Culinary Corner, yes! I also think at this point that the things I'd miss the most are the newly-named Mascot Watch and What Paul Did Last Night.

Not sure how they might fit in on the new Substack, but in recent years it's the more personal content that I've connected with the most (like keeping up with an old friend). And all of the cat content over the years has really been meaningful to me; I adopted my cat right around the time I started reading the blog, after I got my first post-grad school job in the fall of 2006.

After my cat became very ill this fall, I found myself--knowing what was coming for my big guy--going back and re-reading the post about Caitlin's passing. It was a really hard time for me emotionally, but those words about Caitlin helped me out so much in their grace and the perspective they offered. And the adoption of Biscuit and Waffles has moved me in a different way, reminding me of how I can my open my heart to other cats (and pretty much convincing me this time that I need to get a pair of siblings).

Will you be deleting all your uni related content on your substack after you switch to the new topic? There are some great uni articles that i still havent gotten around to reading.

Nothing is being deleted. My full Substack archive will remain accessible to paid subscribers.

Congratulations on the "pretirement!" I look forward to both Paul's writing here on the soon-to-be-rebranded Inconspicuous Consumption substack and the work of the staff over at the daily blog. I realize I'm just one commenter, but I can honestly say that I will read whatever Paul is gracious enough to share with us for as long as he's sharing his writing.

Congratulations and Thank You! I've loved Uni-Watch since the beginning and this is so bittersweet. I'll be sad to miss these, but also very happy that you are moving on to do something you love. I also totally hear you on the "Uni-Verse" going in a direction that makes you feel not-so-great and wanting to get away from that.
