I always enjoy these “Ask Me Anything” columns. I thought I was the only guy in NY who routinely looked at Roadside America before long drives! And yes, when WFT peeled off the helmet stripes it was the beginning of the end. At least they didn’t embrace the “colored shoulder pad” look (see USFL Maulers & Showboats; XFL Roughnecks; NFL Cardinals, etc.) Thank you Paul.
Speaking of Spade Cooley, here's a link to a video by an artist named Tom Russell. He did an interesting song/video about the Bakersfield Sound of the mid fifties/early sixties, and mentions Spade Cooley, and includes a clip of one of his performances. High school teams coopting pro and college logos is certainly a thing, but that Obama Eagles logo is actually fairly different (albeit inspired) by the Philly logo?
Regarding the Cardinals, I never paid much attention to this phenomenon but now I can't not notice it! This weekend I saw 3 instances of Cardinals being depicted with yellow beaks. One particularly stood out to me though. There is a local tennis club in my hometown called the Cardinal Racquet Club. Their sign in front of the club shows an illustrated Cardinal with a yellow beak, but when I went to their website it shows the same illustration with a red beak. What a fun rabbit hole you've sent me on!
